Is It Time to Cut Your Hair? See These Tips on How to Do This at Home

Are you bored. Tired of staying home. And with each passing day, his hair is more disheveled. Is it time to cut it at home? The subject seems to be generating more and more anxiety.

Some see the idea with fear of the risks of a disaster - which can often be difficult to fix later. “I don't recommend [cutting your hair at home]. Your hairdresser will be there when things get better, so if you can wait, it's better, ” Sophia El Alami , from Brian Graham Salon , Minneapolis, Minnesota, told HuffPost US.

To face the quarantine without using scissors, El Alami has some tips: “It could be a good time to try new styles. Comb it back or to the side - try it. Use spray to add texture and volume ”. Another idea is to look for accessories that you haven't used in a long time. "A scarf on the head is an idea, or barrettes and hairpins."

But what about those who just can't take their own hair anymore? If that's the case, you can try to solve it - following professional advice.

We talked to stylists and searched the internet for the best tips. Even if the result isn't exactly what you wanted, remember that it's just hair. For most of us, it is a renewable resource. And you can always put on a hat when participating in a call through Zoom.

First step: arriving at the “salon”

Get out of the house. Now go back inside. Ready! You're in the lounge! Sit in the chicest chair in the house and browse an old gossip magazine. Accept the cucumber-infused water receptionist offer. (Hint: prepare some cucumber water.)

Second step: prepare your workstation

It's time! Go to your hairdresser's chair. Where should she stay? According to hairdresser and colorist Tim Foster of The District on 50th Salon + Spa in Edina, Minnesota, the ideal is to look for a small, enclosed space where you can see what you are doing and which will be swept away when you are finished. For most people, we are talking about the bathroom.

"To make cleaning easier, you can cover the floor with towels," he told HuffPost. “The hair is very light and spreads everywhere. So, be prepared. ”

Professional tip: while it seems smart to do this in the box, it's probably not a good idea. "You need a well-lit mirror to be able to see what you're doing," says Foster.

Cover your clothes, even if you've been wearing the same pajamas for a week. If you have a raincoat, it will do just fine. Otherwise, try a tip from Maryam Maquillage (see below): make a hole in a garbage bag to improvise the covers used in the salons.

Ideally you would use a hairdressing machine, razor or scissors . But, if you don't have this type of equipment at home, get the sharpest scissors you have.

"If you have sharp scissors that you only use to cut fabrics, that's fine," says Foster. “In general, the tip is the least sharp part of old scissors, and you need them to cut your hair.

And don't use the scissors to cut your toenails, it's disgusting . ” When in doubt, Foster suggested testing his scissors by cutting a little hair as a test. If she cuts easily, you're all set.

Step Three: What are we going to do?

Talk to your stylist (yes, it's you) about what you want to do. Do you want to remove the bangs from your eyes? Hit the ear contour? Cut a few inches of split ends? We selected some videos below.

The stylists we interviewed and the videos we watched are unanimous: take it easy. “You have plenty of time. It is better not to cut too much right away. If it doesn't look good, you can repeat the procedure, ”recommends Foster.

Hit the bangs

Enjoy the company of the most sincere hairdresser on the planet, Amber. She certainly deserves the “Person with whom we would most like to have a beer when this is all over” award. Until that day comes, consider the video a virtual happy hour.

The 12-minute tutorial has neither judgment nor guilt. "It's okay if you trim your bangs instead of going to the salon, because everyone has the right to see," she says. "There is not only one way to do things, and that goes for getting the bangs right," she adds, philosophically.

After watching the entire video, you'll be ready to follow Amber's main recommendation: "cut a little and check, cut a little and check".

You will laugh out loud when she recommends "be careful not to pierce your eyes or cut your lashes". Amber even offers a texture tip (“only for professionals”), in which she warns that amateurs should not try this type of thing and then complain that they have no bangs.

Cut the ends of long straight hair

More than 3 million people watched this video, either to enjoy the glamor of Maryam Maquillage or to trim their own hair. She gives clear instructions and step-by-step instructions for trimming straight, shoulder-length hair.

She is also very sincere, admitting that she ended up cutting about 7 centimeters, when in fact she wanted to take only about 4. But, shrugging, she says: "Okay, my hair was dead anyway". She uses her fingers, not a ruler, but the end result looks absolutely perfect - which may have more to do with her fabulous hair than with her experience.

Trimming curly hair

Mell, also known as #ManesByMell, is a super-curly hair stylist. In this 14-minute video, she belies the myth that you can't cut curly hair and gives you tips for getting very thin or tousled curls. She also has a great sense of humor, almost a combination of hair tutorial and “My Cousin Vinny”.

Yes, Mell is funny, confident and relaxed, but, like her favorite high school teacher, she passes on a lot of knowledge while teaching the “perfect cut”. If you are looking for the exact definition of “hair maintenance”, or tips for maintaining healthy hair that does not require a lot of visits to the hairdresser, Mell is the right person.

Trimming short hair

Do you just want to fix the neck and above the ears? Don't you want to hear a lot of history? This is the video for someone who chooses the barber based on the criteria of speed and silence, not artistic talent. In just over 11 minutes, Mr. Tips for Clips teaches you how to trim short male hair, including a special trick to cut the back without the help of two mirrors. Note: You need a machine to follow these instructions.

Trimming natural hair

YouTuber Naptural85 promises not only that your cutting tips are super easy, but that they work on natural, relaxed, curly and straight hair. In addition, with her smile and relaxation, she makes you believe that cutting your own hair is not only possible, but also fun. This 9-minute video delivers on its promise. Without using heating methods that can damage the hair, she demonstrates how to gather some simple pieces of equipment (scissors, three types of combs and some clips), twist the hair and work backwards to avoid dead ends. One of the highlights of the video? At 2 minutes, when she looks at the split ends of her hair and says: "Oh my God, look at my hair". We women with split ends know very well what she is talking about.
